This post is a summary of the main points discussed during the conference call this Monday with Brazilian producers and input dealers. In today's call, 89 producers from BA, GO, MS, MT, and PR participated, along with agronomists and consultants.

BA - Bahia

MT – Mato Grosso

MS – Mato Grosso do Sul

GO – Goias

PR – Parana

SP – São Paulo

+ Corn conditions in MT and GO are very good so far. The combination of earlier planting and good conditions in the last 30 days are boosting the optimistic estimates for yields. Many producers in both states mentioned this was one of the best Aprils ever seen. As such, corn farmer selling has been very active, despite the lower flat price. Elevators mentioned that there are still soybeans from this year and corn from last year in storage and a bumper crop coming, which is going to add pressure to logistical costs. Clearly, truck freights rates have bottomed.

+ In MS and PR states the conditions have improved, which is going to help the fields that were planted later. Agronomists mentioned 1/3 of the area in center-south of MS state was planted earlier, an area that suffered from hot and dry conditions. This area is not able to recover. The same comments were heard from the west of PR. In general, the feeling is that MS and PR have an irreversible failure in parts of both states, which can be more than compensated by MT and GO.

+ Truck freights bounced after they hit the lowest point in more than 4 years in many routes. Additionally, rates are still cheaper than rail freights to Santos. The cheapest logistics today are still by truck towards northern ports. There are rumors that tradings could switch their program earlier from soybeans to corn, if the corn origination margin is better than soybeans.
