Truck freight rates continue to fall across Brazil. This movement was unexpected, considering that Mato Grosso has already harvested over 60% and Paraná is reaching 50%, a much faster pace than in previous seasons. Possible reasons for the decline:

  • Faster harvesting, resulting in a shorter waiting time for trucks at farms and warehouses;
  • The export program is losing momentum. Total nominations on February 21 last year were 12.4 million tons, compared to 11.4 million this year. The total program volume is higher this year, but this is due to the higher volume shipped so far. Farmer selling is very slow, and the origination margin is very negative. The figure shows that the total program is at 19.1 million tons compared to 17.8 million tons last year. Note that by the end of March 2023, the total commitment was at 35.7 million tons, a volume that probably won't be surpassed this year.
  • Cheaper freight rates may also be related to the size of the crop, confirming a shortfall. Despite the rapid advance of harvesting in Mato Grosso and Paraná, total nominations in Paranaguá are decreasing. Total nominations in Paranaguá dropped from 1.4 million tons on January 25 to 1.03 million by the 20th of this month.
